Open-Source Operating Systems for University Environment

Target group: System administrator.

Number of hours: 17

Program description

One of the most important characteristics of open-source systems and applications is their compatibility and harmony with research environments. This can be attributed to the free nature of these systems and applications in terms of providing primary application sources and their ability to share and then research, innovation and development, which is consistent with one of the most important functions and objectives of scientific research institutions.

In addition to the above, it can be said that the historical role played by universities and their affiliated research institutes in creating the initial versions of the Linux operating system has formed a basic incubator for all open-source operating systems later on. Therefore, the use of these systems in these environments has become natural and constitutes a comprehensive solution at the same time, especially if we take into account other advantages such as low cost and no need to renew annual licenses.

In this section, we will review the problems specific to university environments and provide realistic solutions derived from the experiences of Sudanese universities.
